Mohawk Reef is a shore dive located west of Santa Barbara Harbor. Although this dive is not for the novice diver, it is one of the best locations in the area. Clear water, kelp, and the interesting structural features at the reef make this dive unique. Because of issues with accessibility, this site is easier for snorkelers to reach than scuba divers. If one does decide to scuba here, entrance should be done at Arroyo Beach. For snorkelers, entrance is easiest at Mesa Lane. Rubberlip surfperch, senoritas, pipefish, cabezon, swell sharks, and rockfish all inhabit this area. Harbor seals may often make a diver their companion. Calico bass, sheephead and opaleye are often found in the kelp and lingcod and lobsters can be found on the outside near the drop off of the reef. A rare form of kelp has also been seen at this location which has found a way to grow in sand. This is an interesting site with a lot to offer.
