The Capt. Dan was a Coast Guard buoy tender named Hollyhock. The ship was sunk in memorial for Capt Dan Garnsey in 1990.

The most famous of Ft. Lauderdale's wrecks is the 198-foot freighter Mercedes I. She received national attention, when on Thanksgiving Day in 1984 during a storm, she lost her anchorage and ran aground against a seawall of an exclusive Palm Beach mansion.

I dove this wreck at first light this morning 1,18,2010. Vis was about 30' and water was snotty. Current was about 1KT to the south. There were plenty of small fish on and above the wreck. No AJ's or grouper. Always a nice dive I was a little disapoint...

I like diving the Mercedes because I usually see a huge goliath grouper in the stern. It barked at me once! If you are interested in fish biology...the creole wrasse are usually mating with eachother all over the wreck!
