A don't miss kind of place.
This is one of those dives that you really shouldn't miss, just for the mere fact that it's not everyday you get to see an 8' statue of Jesus in 20' of water surrounded by corals and fans. I believe it's the most photographed underwater site in the world. BE SURE to visit on a WEEKDAY, do NOT go on a weekend, when the rest of the world is going to be there. Tuesday and Wednesdays are usually best to beat the crowds. ;-)

Way too crowded.
As one of the most popular dive & snorkel spots of the Upper Keys, how can you help but want to see it. Once was enough. Not only does the surface look like a plane crash from all of the snorkelers in neon yellow vests splashing on the surface, there were numerous amounts of other boats not paying attention to divers' bubbles going in and out of the area. You literally have to wait in line to take your picture around the statue, which is completely covered in Fire Coral (in other words - don't touch.) The reef around the statue has been completely beaten to death, and there's just not so much life. Once you get away from the statue the health of the reef greatly improves though. You just have to get far away from the statue.
There are SO MANY other dive sites in the Upper Keys that are so much better than this one. It's definitely my least favorite site in the Keys.

Beautiful, but Crowded
Definately the hot-spot near Pennekamp, this site was teeming with humanity from party boats. It is, however, worth the trouble to see the statue of Christ, and there is lots of reef accessible to snorkelers.

I hate to be critical........
...but this was my least favorite dive in FKNMS. On this day, 7/14/08, A.M. dive, vis was good, marine life was poor & I felt that the reef at this spot was over visited, wasn't as vibrant as the others. It was nice to see the statue that I have seen often in photos though.

Cool site, but not my favorite in the Keys
The vis on the particular day we hit this site was terrible there, though I know that can change with conditions. Seeing the statue was cool and all, and I'm glad I got to do it, but all in all it wasn't all that great of a dive. I didn't see any cool or out of the norm critters, just your regular collection of grunts and such. Cool site to do once, but I sure ain't gunna bug a boat captain to go there again.
