Middle Ground

Middle Ground consists of a series of small reefs and can be found 13.5 nautical miles from the Mayport jetties. The area contains two artificial reefs which have become popular. A steel tug 85 feet down has fostered the formation of a variety of soft corals as well as sponges. The second artificial reef was funded by the Japanese government as an experiment.

The ?Japanese Reef? is actually a pyramid of fiberglass tubes with interconnected loops that has drawn large fish to the area. Middle Ground has a variety of reefs to visit and explore and contains large amounts of sea life.
