This Liberty ship was built in Baltimore, Maryland and was originally named Faithful. The plan was to transfer the ship to the British Royal Navy, but she was retained by the United States Navy and renamed Dionysus. Dionysus served during the Second World War and during the Korean War.

In 1978 Dionysus was deployed as an artificial reef in the Oregon Inlet Reef (AR-160) close to the Liberty Ship, Zane Grey. Oregon Inlet Reef lies four miles southeast from the Oregon Inlet sea buoy. Depths range from 40-80 feet.
