Mercedes and her groupers
I like diving the Mercedes because I usually see a huge goliath grouper in the stern. It barked at me once! If you are interested in fish biology...the creole wrasse are usually mating with eachother all over the wreck!

A good dive when the conditions are good
I dive this wreck pretty much weekly. I have seen this wreck with howling current and 10ft visibility many times. I've also hit it with no current and 100ft visibility. My opinion is on some days it's tough for advanced, veteran diver's with thousands of dives. On other days someone with limited wreck experience who's comfortable at depth could be brought down with a divemaster and have a great, safe dive. The wreck itself has changed so much since I first started diving it. It's no longer a complete ship now that the hurricanes have ripped her in two. That said much of this dive can be spent at 75-85 FSW and diving it on Nitrox gives you plenty of bottom time to explore her. There is reef all around both pieces and I always like to have a look around the reef when the conditions allow. Be sure to bring a light and shine the many holes and openings inside the wreck. You'll quite often get a surprise. I plan on shooting this wreck in HD video soon and releasing the video free of charge.

Very nice!
If you are expecting a huge, in-tact ship, this is NOT the dive for you. The mercedes is very much broken apart, the main structure (tower) is smashed in and the whole thing is twisted all over.
However! What a beautiful dive. There are huge swim throughs, a couple small penetration areas, and because it sits on the 3rd reef (literally) the depth average was only around 80-90 feet with much of the dive around 70 feet. This site also has WAY less current than sites like the Jim Atria which sits off the reef.
The spot was loaded with fish, more than I expected, and the ship literally lies between 2 wonderful sections of reef. I would highly recommend this dive to anyone comfortable with 90-100 ft dives.

A return visit is in order
This was a beautiful dive with lots to see...the ship is enourmous and has an incredible amount of marine life that lives inside it... it is definately a must see for anyone visiting Ft. Lauderdale... the reef surrounding this ship is just as amazing... there were many large hole that made parts of this wreck penetratable, but I am no where near at that level of experience...but I am sure what I peeked into held an incredible abundance of life...including a very large nurse shark that called the Mercedes home.... I can't wait to go back...

Worth the trouble
Dove on a somewhat choppy day with a bit of trouble anchoring to site but once down it was well worth the effort. Very large wreck with lots of sea life, including a fair size nurse shark resting in the bottom of the hull. Hard to dive in a strong current as we were in that day but vis was great (50 - 100 ft.) and could have spent an hour down there just exploring the site.

Cool Wreck in Ft Lauderdale
This was my first dive in about 4 years. It was great to be diving again. Ran out of air at about 40 feet on the way up.

Its a cool wreck dive with lots of fish life in about 90 feet of water
Myself and two other divers dove this spot on July 31st. It was a little difficult to find because it doesn't have mooring bouys, but with the GPS cooridinates, we were able to locate it fairly quickly. The visibility was about 40 feet. There was a little current, but not too much. Most of the dive was spent between 75 and 90 feet. The cool thing is that this wreck is on a reef so there is a lot to see around the wreck. I tried spearing, but I couldn't get close to any of the five 25+ pound groupers that I saw. Because of the depth, the current, and the barracudas, I decided just to dive rather than spear. I was impressed with the marine life. This looks like a good location to go back and fish as well as dive. I would recommend seeing it if you are in the Fort Lauderdale area.
