San Pedro

This Galleon was part of the 1733 wreck that forced 21 ships on to the Florida Keys. These ships were attempting to bring silver pesos from Havana when they were advised to change route to avoid an oncoming storm. This advisory did not come soon enough to save the ships, which all went down on July 15, 1733.

This particular ship lies in a sand pocket in a large grass bed about 1.25 miles south of Indian Key. The ship is submerged in 18 feet of water among coral heads. It is important to be particularly careful in diving this site because it is one of Florida’s second Underwater Archeological Preserve. A 17th century anchor as well as concrete cannons have been added to this site to help increase the nesting options for sea life in the area.
