Extraordinary Night Dive
If you can get to the site just beofre dusk and snorkel around for orientation, you can get a great sense of how the wreck lays out and is well worth doing - especialy fin out to the bow to get a sense of length...The wreck, at dusk, is pretty "brooding" at dusk and sets off nicely against the sea floor. the night I was there, boiluminescence was present the entire water column. If you can get your group to do so, settle on the deck and turn off your lights until your eyes become used to the dark. You will, of course, be treated to a great light showw if you wave your arms around. But, if you wait long enough with your lights off and don't move, you wil begin to see the individual creatures sparkling in the background like stars against the sky. When we were there and after we turned our lights on, I looked up and saw a terrific school of great barracuda schooling above. Once the lights were trained on them - they scattered like roaches. We did this several times and it was pretty fun.
Parrot fish come to the wreck to sleep at night and, the night we were there, there were perhaps 200 - 300 parrot fish at the start of the divew and, at the end, too many to count. The parrot fish hang out in the ribs of the ship along both sides. lots of laobster and big crabs here as well - we alos got site of a decent sized turtle. Be sure to look into the holes in what is left of the deck - you will see hundreds of shrimp eyes staring back at you.
I went back to the wreck during the day twice thereafter but viz was a bit stirred up so it wasn't quite as captivating as that particular night which was one of the best dives I've ever had. I went with Quiesence dive shop our of Key Largo - they wewre great; however, they ony run six packs (I think) and if conditions are rough, you might want a bigger boat. The night we were there (August 2010) the conditions were very calm and I really liked diving with that shop.
I dove 4 times a day off of Key largo (on Nitrox) and this dive along with Horseshoe Reef, Elbow Reef, and the Spiegel Grove were simply brilliant dives that I would recommend to any diver.

Great "FISHY" dive...
I love diving the wreck of the Benwood. It's shallow, and a tank can get you a long way. LOTS of fish on this dive. Usually a pretty easy dive - although, at times you can catch a mean current on this wreck. Easy enough to use the wreck for relief. Don't miss it!

I liked this wreck
Vis was good, marine life was great, had a big hawksbill swim right at me & dove at the last second just barely swimming under me. I love wrecks & this was real cool. I would revisit at a later date. I was there on 7/15/08 in the A.M., no current

Easy dive
This is a great dive to just look around and relax. DEpth at high tide was 37 ft and a tank went along way. Huge green eel welcomes you at the stern and so many fish! Current was mild and viz was 75 ft. A very nice dive all together and the park staff were top knotch on the dive boat. Save some bucks and take the park charter.

GREAT PLACE FOR STUDENT CHECKOUT DIVES
I have certified hundreds of new divers in Key largo. The wreck of the Benwood is always one of my certification dives. We dive with a great operation called Sea Dwellers. The owners & crew are top notch & dedicated to making our diving a great experience. Thanks, Jeff, Rob, Scott & crew.
