I was wondering if there were any spots to go snorkeling right off the beach without renting a boat or something. It could be anywhere from west palm to the keys.

Go to any of your local dive shops and buy the beach diving book for about $17-$20. There are many spots to go where all you need is parking change, snorkle equipment, and a dive flag to warn boaters. Deerfield Beach has a nice reef that is easy to get to. Park in the big lot on 2nd street by the fire station and walk to the private beach at Cove Beach Club. Enter the water by the boulder piles and swim out until you are as far out as the covered part of the fishing pier. You will be in 15-20ft. The reef runs parallel to the shore. Much sealife and easy to get to.

Thanks for the posts. Wondering if you had a report from your snorkeling? We are heading to Fort Lauderdale for a week in March. The family is addicted to snorkeling and this will be our first trip north of the keys so we are looking for great snorkel spots on the beaches. We're pretty easily impressed with anything more than just sea grass! The ocean is amazing.

If snorkeling from the beach, do you really need a dive flag? (Sorry if that's a dumb question but we dont need them in South Dakota!)

Wet Suits? Ironically I get chilled and cramp quickly in the water.

If you get cold easy a 3mm should be good. the water is about 70 or so. There is a little reef at the end of commercial blvd in Fort Lauderdale around the pier. you must stay 300f from the pier. I usually go in north of the pier and just kick out to the reef. There is a bigger one past that first one. Hope this helps. I also just moved here from SD
