Sounds like you were close to your limit on the Black Grouper. Great food for the grill. I came up with a couple decent size black snapper two weeks ago, but while I was down came face to face with a 600lb. Goliath Grouper. Fish swam up on me as I was peering through the side of a wreck. Took me a minute to realize he wasn't going to swallow me down. Always a good thing to get the adrenaline pumping at 100'.

Living here in the Keys we shoot dinner most of the time. If we have company I shoot 2 Groupers (legal sized) or 1 big one (20+)and poke around the rest of our dives looking for Snappers or Hogs, while enjoying the scenery.
Have had more than one encounter with Jewfish while spearing. Just recently lost 2 Groupers & 2 shafts to Jewfish on the same wreck.
That's life

I've heard Jewfish can be aggressive when you're hunting in their "territory." What kind of spearguns do you like? I'm half debating going with a pneumatic for maintenance reasons, but I'm not crazy about some models I've seen. The grip/trigger mechanism is at the very end of the barrel. Seems like it would be a hassle reloading with nothing except the grip for leverage. The gun I use has a butt plate for leverage and the trigger is about a forearm's length from the end of the barrel. Replacement bands are almost as much as a new gun so I'm not sure what direction to take.

My girlfriend & I prefer Riffe mid handle guns. She shoots a Hawaiian, I shoot an No KA Oai.

Longer guns give you more versatility, but you must have the ability/skill to enjoy them.
I personally have no desire to own anything but a band gun. Pneumatic guns lose their power at depth, restrict your modifications. Simply stated not the gun of choice of spearfishermen.

I'll have to check out the Riffe line of guns. Daryl Wong is a little steep for my wallet and to be quite honest with you many times I'm so close to the fish I kill that if I had a good hook in my hand I could probably make a decent game of it. However there have been a few times when distance shots would have been a nice option. New bands will help this I'm sure. Thanks again.

I do a lot of spearfishing and have many friends that do it as well. I-They are all using band guns. I shoot a JBL woody mag. Many of my friends are using either Sea Hornets or AB Biller guns. My recomendation is to purchase whatever band gun that will allow you to get parts at your local dive store. Biller guns are carried at MANY dive shops. It helps if you get in a pinch and need a shaft, band or a part. Whatever brand you choose is a personal thing, but I highly recomend a band style gun.

I agree that band guns are the way to go. I use a biller 48 and it gets the job done.
