In Broward County, Commercial Blvd just South of the pier. Reef is close and lots to see. Get there early if you want a decent parking place.

Also, bring plenty of quarters for the parking meters-$1 per hour and meter maids will be on an expired meter within 15 seconds.
The reef is very close to shore and for the more hardy, the second reef will blow you away. Literally and figuratively. Figure at least 30 minute surface swim each way and a good walk back due to currents.

Take 95 all the way to the Sheridan street exit, and fallow that to the end, crossing the inter coastal highway, take a right at the end and go to Johnson st and take a left. if you are lucky there might be a parking spot next to the beach, if not there is a garage for 5 or 10$ right there. Put on your gear and walk straight of the beach. its about .15 miles of shore (not as bad as it sounds) you will hit a reef. continue over the reef it will drop off and it will be about 2, 3 feet high. fallow that "wall" north and south. you will hit both ends of the reef on 1 tank. hour or so on a very leasurly swim. The trigger fish will fallow you for most of it. i have scene a 7 foot manatee that fallowed us for about 20 min. Nurse shark ounce, few southern sting ray. Decent amount of life on that wall. All of this is in 15 18 feet of water.
Supposedly there is a artificial reed a little north of that spot called "the yellow brick rode" If i find it i will post it.

If you're close to Boca Raton, check out Red Reef Park, http://www.ci.boca-raton.fl.us/rec/parks/redreef.shtm . It's mostly a snorkling spot but you could get some major bottom time with a tank on your back. The reef(s) are close in and there is a lot to see for a novice. I have seen cuttle fish, barracuda and an assortment of other smaller fish. Plus, it's a really nice place to take the family for the day even if you're not snorkling or diving.

I tried to find that spot, off of Boca, never found anyhting, I could have been in the wrong spot but as the same similar story was told too me, I found ziltch. It did not seem like anything could be in the vicinity.
Now perhaps it is because I am spoiled from beach diving off the Commercial Blvd area. It is very true and on one of those prestige days the reef dive can compare to that of the Caribbean! It is one of the best kept secrets.
Fair warning there can be lots of weather variations that can influence the dive. And one needs to be a competent diver to manage swimming to the second reef. Not to mention have common sense regarding boat vessel traffic above!
Remember people to be carefull on the reef, please anchor in the sand.
