I'm planning a trip to Islamorada in mid August. Are there any lobster to be had after the Mini Season? I only have a small boat, is snorkling the grass flats productive at all?
Thanks
Butch

Don't waste your time.
Season closes August 5th and there aren't any to catch that late in the season unless you are diving the deep ledges 8- 100ft. They are "slaughtered" during Mini season in the shallow water.
We don't dive shallow at all for this reason. You'll be like vultures picking carcasses on the highway.

The season starts August 6th this year. I would think there would be a lot left!

You would think??????
Living here and seeing what goes on you'd be suprised.
The commercial guys have been "soaking" for a week. The pillagers have been taking lobsters legally & illegally for a week.
Last year you couldn't catch a 1 person limit on a boat the 2nd week. Not saying you won'y have fun or not get lucky but don't count on limiting (6 per person per day)every day.
Last few years the lobstering has been way down. Only higher wholsale prices have kept alot of the boys in the bussiness.

I agree that last year really sucked. However, the year before and before an before I limited out every day of my vacation. I have a timeshare in Key Largo the first week of the main season.

It depends. Previous recent seasons have been wind falls. So invariably every season can be great or bad. Mini season itself is a goog guage, if its good, then it should continue to be good if you know the spots. Snorkling in the grass can be hard unless you know of a sweet area.

Not to burst any bubbles but, we dive a few days a week year round here in the Middle Keys.
Lopbstering isn't looking too god for the coming season ( we are only diving deep ledges and wrecks right now). Last week we took a couple on a shallow wreck and reef, didn't see awhole lot of lobster.
Hope for your sake that you have some "good spots".

Well maybe Rich if you and others would stop taking lobsters out of season there would be better replenishments seen.

amoney, you are a real dummy for lack of better words and really uninformed.
I in 34years living in the Keys have never taken a lobster out of season or a short, or an egg bearing female. Or speared undersized fish.
You have no idea who I am, what I do for a living yet you make accusations. Fact is the shallow dives we did recently were actually research dives with FWC biologists.
No apology necessary
