Come back, I'll talk to you.

I'm a wannabe free diver -- make that a gonnabe. 8)

I'm in Palm Beach County, Florida, and am currently looking for shallow reefs at which to develop skills.

Went out around Boca inlet on Monday. Didn't see any bugs. Not even any shorts. Where are they? People are getting them, I hear, but I haven't seen a bug since June. Is anyone out there seeing them in relatively shallow water? Thanks< Jason

I'll talk freediving...

...Although being based in New England does pose its limitations, but I manage. Attempting to master freediving in the cold North Atlantic waters is great training for freediving in the warmer southern waters.
I also try to take some pics (I have some posted on this site: key largo, Christ of the Abyss & Molasses Reef) when I dive the easier sites.
Let's keep this dialog going.

I've been scuba diving for about ten years now, but I would like to get serious about free diving. My dive fins just aren't cutting it, can anyone suggest a good pair of freediving fins?

A few years back I purchased a pair of Cressi Sub Master Frogs. They feature an adjustabe strap with quick release, instead of the full boot. The fin is fairly rigid, but with a 28" blade you get lots of thrust with minimal effort. One of the best buys i've made...

... They were about $130.00

Anyone do beach dives in South Florida? Spearfishing? I don't have a boat or kayak, so I've been thinking about swimming out a way with a float. Here in Palm Beach County there are a fair number of rocky strips within a couple of hundred yards or so of the beach.

I used to spend much time at the beach about twenty-five years ago -- before I started diving -- and sometimes, at high tide, I would see good size fish near the shore (dolphins, pompanos, jacks), particularly around rocks and other obstructions. Sometimes there were shoals of baitfish, as well. I don't know whether it's that way anymore. I suspect not. Nowadays, I rarely even see seabirds in any number.

I mostly scuba but do alittle freediving too here in Panama City Beach, Fl. I have been using Omer Milleniums for 3 years and I love them for scuba spearing and for freediving. Anything other than a true longblade and you are wasting time for freediving. With respect to the frog fin reccomendation, I have had a pair for quite some time and they aren't as good as split fins for scuba or longblades for freediving.

http://www.spearfishinggear.com $128.95 or $199 for the whole package of mask, snorkel, fins and socks.

Anything besides a full foot pocket is less efficient in energy transfer to the fin, resulting in lost power so don't think anything where you wear a traditional booty with zippers and a sole if made for this application, hence the need for socks. Also, the lower the volume of the mask the better because you have to use your precious air to keep the mask from sucking your eyeballs out as you go deep, the deeper you go the more you expend in this manner, hence the need for the low volume mask. Obviously I like the package idea if you don't already own the important components.

You will be able to hit 60' if you are properly outfitted and weighted the first day, almost regardless of physical shape.

Thanks to both Krschmitz and PatMyGreen for your recommendations, they were helpful when considering the options. I decided to go with the black freediving package for $199 (SpearfishingGear.com) that includes: an Omer Alien mask, 5mm socks, Omer Millennium Black Freediving Fins, and an Omer Zoom Soft flexible snorkel. I also picked up a respiratory trainer for $22.95; I?m not sure if this thing is worth it, but it was cheap enough to satisfy my curiosity. Has anyone out there benefited from a respiratory trainer? I'll let you know how the new gear works out, once I get a chance to use it!

Hey I am new to this site and it is cool. The respiratory trainer that you talked about did you get a chance to use it, did it help? I like to think that i freedive till i heard depths of 60 to 70! this sounds cool. i have only been able to hold my breath to get down to 35. What is the trick????

I love the downloadable dive sites. I've updated my gps, so when I'm showing my tourist friends, I'll have great sites to take them to. Thank you for this service.

She prefers top side. That's alright. One less worry below. You guys spearing in Miam or Ft. Laud? We work the reefs just south n north of cesars creek. Not much to see, but we get lucky everyonce in a while. These divespots listed here will hold fish, just got to keep checking. Bimini is the way to go. Its getting used to the sling that's tough.

When he goes with his friends they either leave out of the keys,(Key Largo) mainly, or from Ft. Laud. Every once and a while they go out of Miami Beach. Ive just gone with him from the keys. But when he goes he almost always brings back hogs and mackerels. They already have there spots. LOL You just gotta make time I guess. The good thing he has is that he doesn't work the weekends. And we don't have any kids yet...LOL so till then I'll give him his time to go now.
