Spearfishing is ok anywhere but in sanctuary preservation areas (marked on charts) or obviously in canals - yes it is done by irresponsible divers.
I live here full time - shoot groceries every week.

I'm Going to Marathon on 6/21-6/25. I have been here many times and the best spearing that I have found is by dragging a diver behind the boat headed south from Boot Key. the small patch reefs tend to be un-spoiled and produce some nice fish. I know that those of you who live in the keys have numbers to some great spots, does anyone have any "good" numbers that are off the beaten path>? I go to the keys once a year and this one is a short trip I would like to save some time on finding good spearing spots. anything in the Gulf? I live in melbourne and there is some great spearing here, I would be willing to trade some numbers.

sorry for hijacking the thread...

You've got to be kidding?
I'd sooner give up my girlfriend/dive/spearfishing partner than give away numbers. That ain't happening.

If you'll be around saturday, maybe we could dive from our boat on some spots we fish.
If you are a freediver also I have even a better deal for you. A T-bolt rubble pile dive.
Contact me if interested / let's talk

I am headed down to Marathon for sun spearfishing and could really use a hand from some experienced veterans. I am a soldier in Alaska and would be happy to trade for some info on spots here! Hope to hear some good news.

I will be there from June 30-July 07. I have all kinds of greats spots here in Alaska to fish. It's a 'lil far but well worth it. In fact, after work I will be fly fishing with a friend from Colorado for Greyling in the Clearwater river. I hope maybe you can help me on our trip.

I could use a little help. I have never been down to Marathon and will be there from 8-06 thru 8-11. I am bringing my 24ft boat down that is well equipped for spearfishing. I live just north of Tampa and have some good shoot sites here as well as friends that regularly go to the middle grounds.
I have heard some horror stories about people being ticketed for being in protected areas. I don't want to join that faturnity, if you know what I mean. I also plan on bringing my fishing equipment to troll and catch a few on hook and line. Since it's the first week of lobster season, I will be after some bugs as well.
